With podcasts becoming a household item, it’s now easier than ever to set up and start your podcast! Having worked with countless series in starting and launching their podcasts, I’ve naturally created an exact step-by-step guide as to how I start podcasts for my clients—it’s easier than you think, here’s how!
1. Choose Your Topic and Audience:
- What things are you good at, passionate about, and genuinely enjoy?
- It’s a consistent learning experience defining your podcast’s WHO, WHAT, and WHY.
You’d be surprised, you’re not the only one with these unique interests; there’s an entire community with your same thoughts, just waiting for the one voice to speak up!
2. Plan Your Episodes:
- Outline key points for each episode. Think about the main ideas you want to cover.
- This is why step 1 is KEY; the more you know who you’re speaking to and why, you can easily reverse engineer content based on that.
Decide on a format: will it be just you, a co-host, or will you bring in guests for interviews? Mix it up if you’re feeling adventurous.
3. Gather Your Equipment:
- A Microphone – ANYTHING is better than most microphones built into your computer, so please get a mic! You can easily pick one up from Amazon for as little as $25. I always recommend The Blue Yeti as starters.
- Get some decent headphones. While some people prefer not to, it is best practice to prevent echoes in your recording.
- Lighting! You can easily purchase a desk ring light or a small light that clips on to your monitor!
- RIVERSIDE! I swear by Riverside for all my clients; yes, there may be some initial learning to do, but it will always be worth it. Platforms like Zoom are not created to facilitate podcasts!
4. Record and Edit:
- Record your episodes. Speak clearly and try not to sound like a robot (unless that’s your podcast theme, then go for it).
- Edit your recordings to cut out mistakes and add effects. Think of it as giving your podcast a nice polish.
5. Upload and Distribute:
Choose a hosting platform like Libsyn or Podbean to upload your episodes. They’ll distribute your podcast to directories like Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Digital Real Estate is Cheap, get as much of it as you can!
It may seem like a lot at once, just follow this step by step and you’ll be up in no time!
Cheers!
